The Delaware Farm Bureau Foundation is once again excited to host its 4th annual Lace Up for Ag Literacy 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, October 19, to raise funds to support their mission to build awareness about Delaware’s agricultural industry and promote the benefits of fresh, local food.
Whether it’s planting seeds, making ice cream, or engaging in other hands-on lessons, children love learning how their food makes its way to their plates. The Foundation is dedicated to building awareness, understanding, and positive public perception of Delaware’s farm operations.
“The Foundation’s commitment to increasing agricultural education is so important for the agricultural industry. The younger generation is filled with future farmers, industry professionals, and consumers. A simple agricultural activity when they are young could lead to a life dedication to agriculture,” said DEFB Ag Literacy and Program Coordinator Alexis Langenfelder.
The Foundation began this 5K Run/Walk to help fundraising efforts. The event highlights local agriculture as participants make their way through a local dairy farm.
The Lace Up for Ag Literacy 5K Run/Walk will take place at Hopkins Farm Creamery located at 18186 Dairy Farm Rd. in Lewes. Registration will open at 8:00 am, with the formal run beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Hopkins Farm Creamery is a popular, family-friendly location situated in the heart of Green Acres Farm, a fourth-generation farming venture, located at the intersection of Dairy Farm Road and Route 9 in Lewes. According to its website, the creamery operation opened in 2008 “. . .and has been creating new flavors of ice cream and selling them to the public ever since.”
Starting and finishing at the popular ice cream spot, the off-road farm course for the upcoming 5k race will take runners and walkers alike back into the pastures of the farm, past hay bales and a barn, through the covered bridge and around the pond.
Registration for the Lace Up for Ag Literacy 5K Run/Walk event is $30 per person, through Oct. 11. Registration increases to $35 starting Oct. 12 through the day of the event. Checks can be made payable to “DE Farm Bureau Foundation” and mailed to the DE Farm Bureau Foundation at 3457 S. DuPont Hwy, Camden, DE, 19934.
