Time: 45–60 minutes

Big Idea: Learn how sunflowers grow tall and how their seeds are used for food and oil.

What You’ll Need:

  • Sunflower seeds (raw or roasted)
  • Paper and crayons/markers

Part 1. Look and Learn

Show your child sunflower seeds.

Ask:

  • What do seeds look like?
  • Do you eat sunflower seeds as a snack?

Part 2. Meet the Sunflower

Explain:

· Sunflowers follow the sun across the sky.

· Their seeds can be eaten or pressed into oil.

Activity:

Draw a tall sunflower with seeds in the middle.


Part 3. Seed Snack

Eat a few roasted sunflower seeds and talk about how they came from the middle of the flower.


Part 4. If I Were a Sunflower…

Ask:

  • How tall would you grow?
  • What would you use your seeds for?

Draw yourself as a sunflower with a big smiling face.


Wrap-Up Discussion

  • How do sunflowers grow?
  • What can we do with sunflower seeds?
  • What was your favorite part of the lesson?
