Delaware Farm Bureau (DEFB) members were recently recognized for their dedication to feeding local communities, earning honors from the Society of St. Andrew (SoSA) for their work donating fresh food to those in need.

SoSA, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing people together to harvest and share healthy food, reduce food waste, and build caring communities by offering nourishment to hungry neighbors, relies on strong partnerships with farmers. Recently, the organization recognized three Delaware farms for their generous contributions.

Evans Farms of Bridgeville, Marvel Farms of Harrington, and Vincent Farms of Laurel were honored by SoSA for providing 571,836 servings of produce to local feeding agencies.

“As a farmer, we make a living by selling our product; but when we have extra and are able to give, we love to help our neighbors in need,” said awardee Dave Marvel of Marvel Farms. “Society of St. Andrews does a great job helping meet that need and makes it easy on us as farmers to donate our produce.”

Through efforts like gleaning and food donation, farmers are helping strengthen communities across the state. DEFB members are deeply committed not just to producing food, but to ensuring it reaches those who need it most.

For over 45 years, the Society of St. Andrew has worked to bridge the gap between food waste and food insecurity. The organization accepts donations of produce that cannot be sold or would otherwise be left in the field. Their team coordinates the collection of this food and distributes it to nonprofit feeding agencies. To date, SoSA has distributed more than 6 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables across the Delmarva region.

As partnerships between farmers and hunger relief organizations continue to grow, efforts like these ensure that Delaware’s agricultural community remains at the forefront of fighting food insecurity. Delaware Farm Bureau is proud to have members contributing to this important work.
