Volunteers with the Delaware Farm Bureau (DEFB) Foundation spent Ag Literacy Week, March 15–21, 2026, visiting elementary schools across Delaware to read an agriculture‑themed children’s book and spark conversations about where food comes from. During each visit, volunteers highlighted the importance of understanding agriculture and its role in everyday life.

This year’s featured book was “Kenna, the Produce Princess: The Crown of Confidence”, written by local farmer and author Katey Jo Evans. The story follows Kenna through her adventures on the farm and at the county fair, where she learns valuable life lessons such as perseverance and believing in herself. The book promotes agricultural awareness and encourages self-confidence among students throughout the state. Each classroom received its own copy of the book, donated by the Foundation.

Volunteers visited more than 10 schools statewide, reading to numerous classrooms and inspiring students to be curious about agriculture, ask questions, and dream big.

“My students were actively engaged in the agriculture stories and real-world examples that Mrs. Urian brough to life,” said Rebecca Fabi, a teacher at Clayton Intermediate School in Clayton. “My students were participating in conversations about each of the books she shared and were eager to hear more.”

This outreach effort supports the DEFB Foundation’s larger mission: to build awareness, understanding, and positive public perception about Delaware’s farm operations and fresh local food. The Foundation works year‑round to educate children about agriculture, healthy eating, and the importance of knowing where their food comes from.
