As harvest season continues across Delaware, Delaware Farm Bureau (DEFB) reminds motorists to use caution when sharing roads with tractors, combines, and other agricultural equipment.
Throughout fall, farmers frequently travel between farms, often with large equipment moving much more slowly than normal traffic. This requires motorists to be more aware and patient.
“Harvest is one of the busiest times of year for farmers, and moving equipment between fields is part of the job,” said DEFB President Bill Powers. “Whether you’re driving a tractor or a car, being aware of your surroundings, showing a little patience, and looking out for one another helps keep everyone safe.”
DEFB encourages motorists to follow a few simple safety tips when driving near agricultural equipment:
- Slow down and stay alert. Farm equipment often travels much slower than other vehicles, and motorists may approach it more quickly than expected.
- Keep a safe distance. Large equipment can have significant blind spots, making it difficult for drivers to see nearby vehicles.
- Pass only when safe and legal. Avoid passing near intersections, curves, or areas with limited visibility. Remember that farm equipment may need extra room to make wide turns.
- Be patient. Farmers may not have a safe place to pull over immediately, particularly on narrow rural roads.
Farmers are also encouraged to maintain proper lighting, display slow-moving vehicle signs, and remain aware of surrounding traffic.
DEFB reminds everyone that rural road safety is a shared responsibility. A little patience and awareness can help ensure that everyone returns home safely.
