Just because school is ending doesn’t mean reading has to stop! The Delaware Farm Bureau (DEFB) Women’s Committee is encouraging kids to “grow their reading garden” this summer by exploring new books, building their reading skills, and discovering the joy of learning through stories.

As part of the program, children can earn free ice cream from the DEFB Food Booth at the Delaware State Fair by reading at least 10 books.

Students in Pre-K through 8th grade can participate by reading 10 books over the summer, completing the official Reading Challenge form, and submitting it either at the DEFB Food Booth during the Delaware State Fair or to the DEFB State Office by August 1, 2026. Participants who complete the challenge will receive one scoop of ice cream from the DEFB Food Booth at the Fair.

The DEFB Women’s Committee is dedicated to supporting the community, especially youth. Each year, the committee manages the DEFB Food Booth at the Delaware State Fair, with proceeds benefiting their annual scholarship program and other youth development initiatives.

“We wanted to create something that makes reading exciting and rewarding for kids,” said Mollie Lynch, Chair of the DEFB Women’s Committee. “There’s nothing better than finishing a great book and celebrating with a scoop of ice cream at the Fair.”

The DEFB Food Booth will be open from 12:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on July 23, and from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily from July 24 through August 1.

Reading Challenge forms are available at https://defb.org/summer-reading-challenge/, or physical copies can be picked up at the DEFB State Office, located at 3457 S. Dupont Hwy, Camden, DE 19934.
